This is in short a really good recording. Gerdes' handling of the opera is very good (though his tempo in the Pilgrims' Chorus theme of the Overture is almost disturbingly fast), the orchestra is well controlled and very expressive. Birgit Nilsson, one of the greatest Wagnerian sopranos of the 20th Century, sings the two principle female roles - Venus and Elisabeth; Wolfgang Windgassen, who sings the role of Tannhauser, is one of the greatest Wagnerian tenors of the century. And Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, who sings Wolfram, is virtually undisputed as THE baritone of the century.Highly recommend this recording.

In June 2013 the Swedish Chamber Orchestra under the expert direction of Thomas Dausgaard are joined by one of today's foremost Wagner singers. Named 'Singer of the Year' by Opernwelt magazine in 2012, Nina Stemme has been the Isolde of choice at Glyndebourne, Bayreuth and Covent Garden. For this new release Nina performs the five Wesendonck-Lieder, of which two in particular, Im Treibhaus and Träume, were referred to by Wagner as 'studies' for Tristan and Isolde. Wagner himself prepared a version for violin and orchestra of Träume, and the ensemble includes this setting featuring principal violinist, Katarina Andreasson, as soloist.

Wether you love Wagner operas or just his orchestal music or even if you are new to Wagner's music, this is the definitive orchestal recording to have. This 2 CD set contains 157 minutes of the best orchestal Wagner ever available. The Philharmonia Orchestra under the batoon of Otto Klemperer plays perfect, the tempi is slow but not boring, in fact with a lot of feeling and the sound is amazing. The Siegfried Idyll is played with small amount of instruments, just as Wagner intended it to be played.

Siegfried Wagner had the best musical pedigree that a composer could conceivably have: the son of Richard Wagner and the grandson of Franz Liszt (through Liszt's daughter Cosima). His ancestry proved to be a decidedly mixed blessing, however, as the younger Wagner -- despite working in a different musical era -- was never fully able to step outside of the long shadow cast by his father, even as he engendered the jealousy of musical rivals. (...) Following Siegfried Wagner's death, the family did its best to suppress performances of his music, casting its lot with the more popular and profitable works of Richard Wagner, and it was only with lapsing of various copyrights, and the formation of the Siegfried Wagner Society in 1972, that his music was made available again, first in concert editions and more recently in full performances.

Encompassing orchestral works, overtures, marches, songs, choral works and piano music, this collection complements Wagner’s great operas, providing fascinating insights into the composer’s emerging style and musical techniques. It also showcases some rousing, moving and powerful music that is well worth discovering.

Beethoven was inspired to write the "Coriolan Overture" by a drama by the Austrian H.J. von Collin. Wagner wrote the music for Logengrin between 1846 and 1848; the work was then accepted for performance by the Dresden Opera House. The overture and the first act ballet music from the opera "Wilhelm Tell" by Gioacchino Rossini are still very popular today. With his two operas "A Life for the Czar" and "Ruslan and Ludmilla"; Glinka created the national movement in Russian music.

Richard Wagner was one of history's greatest composers, a theater artist of extraordinary genius and vision, and one of the most controversial characters in the entire pantheon of Western art. As a composer, he rewrote the rules for opera—reenvisioning its musical forms and creating dazzling and unforgettable dramatic tapestries that melded orchestral magnificence with the soaring beauty of the human voice. As a theater artist, he pioneered the "Gesamtkunstwerk" or "total artwork" that incorporated music, drama, poetry, philosophy, myth, and ritual, building a theater of revolutionary design and creating musical dramas on a scale never before attempted in history. And, as a self-styled theorist, he pursued an agenda of militant German nationalism, anti-Semitism, elitist prejudice, and unbounded self-glorification in his often troubling philosophical tracts and essays.

Die Feen was Wagner's first completed opera, but remained unperformed in his lifetime. It has never established itself firmly in the operatic repertory although it receives occasional performances, on stage or in concert, most often in Germany. Additionally, the overture has an independent life as an orchestral piece.
