Joseph Losey's 1979 film adaptation of the Mozart opera Don Giovanni adheres faithfully to the original Lorenzo Da Ponte libretto, with rakish Don Giovanni (Ruggero Raimondi) putting the make on the aristocratic Dona Anna (Edda Moser). Giovanni's enemies warn him that he'll suffer mightily for his amorous escapades. And when the gates of hell open up on cue in the last act, and Don Giovanni is dragged screaming into perdition, it turns out those enemies were right.

In 1954, Furtwängler wanted to make of this Don Juan his musical testimony (he died less than 1 year efter this recording), in a "metaphysical ", reserved but alive version, of a unique dramatic strength.
Thanks to the technique still in its beginning of the Movie-opera, we discover in Siepi a Don Juan full of liveliness and in the physical appearance of Hollywood actor, Della Casa so beautiful wasting away in Elvire, or divinely moving Grümmer.
And at the end there is Furtwängler's equally unfashionable reading, romantic and big-honed, taking its time to unfold the drama. Furtwängler definitely tilts the Mozart's "Dramma Giocoso" towards "dramma" aspect, making this performance the most riveting ever seen.
Even if the recording suffers from the technical limits of time (a little faded colors Technicolor), the correct conditions allow us to discover what the spectators of 1954 had seen: a old-fashioned and traditional but alive performance, which gives substance to one of the most mythical and of the most tremendous recordings of Don Giovanni.

Maybe the best Don Giovanni on DVD.

This release is part of last summer’s project to record for DVD all 22 of Mozart’s operas in performances from the Salzburg Festival. This is the only one of the 22 that I have seen so far, but from the trailer, it looks like none of the productions are traditional... FANFARE: Raymond Tuttle

Written by Giovanni Paisiello during his lengthy stay at the court of Catherine II, the opera was an enormous success and was still very famous at the time of the composer’s death the same year of Rossini’s Barbiere debut, strongly opposed by many who considered the work of the upstart to be a sacrilegious attack on the memory of Paisiello. The reductive transposition for libretto – probably the work of Giuseppe Petrosellini – of the play “Le barbier de Séville” by Pierre-Augustin de Beaurmarchais, successfully presented in St. Petersburg a few years earlier, determined the international success of the subject: the second text of the French trilogy gained the attention of Mozart, who proposed it to Da Ponte for Le nozze di Figaro (1786)...

Paisiello (1740-1816) was the master of Italian opera buffo and a significant influence on Mozart. His orchestral writing and musical characterizations are deft and dramatic, and he was the first to introduce ensemble finales into comic operas. Don Chisciotte is an early work, premiered in Naples (where he spent most of his life) in 1769, and it already shows all the skills that made his work popular throughout Europe. The libretto by Lorenzi is based on a 1719 play that deals with the Don's visit to a noble court and the tricks that are played on him there, drawing in material from elsewhere in Cervantes' novel, including his tilt with the windmills.

Don Carlo is here presented in the full 5 Act Italian version and this performance is under the inspired direction of Carlo Maria Giulini who had celebrated the 'new' Covent Garden centenary with this opera in 1958. The cast then was different, but the Royal Opera Orchestra and Chorus remain, and they're on cracking form.
